GENERAL DETAILING 66 bauder. ie CHANGE IN LEVEL The creation of a change in level on any flat roof can be achieved with a simple detail utilising the pre- formed metal angle flashing as shown here. The preformed metal angles are mechanically fastened to the structure where the direction of the membrane changes. On details of over 500mm a flat section of metal is incorporated to provide a resistance to slumping or billowing of the vertical membrane. ROOFLIGHTS Constructing a waterproof detail to a standard builder's kerb for a rooflight can be easily achieved using a pre formed metal upstand of pre- coated single ply metal. This method of detailing will also provide a mechanical restraint against wind uplift of the membrane around this type of penetration. If the penetration is an irregular shape, such as circular, then the upstand will need to be formed using a piece of unreinforced membrane. Bauder supplies a range of rooflights with an insulated kerb suitable and compatible with our single ply systems. PAVING ON SUPPORTS In this type of application a Bauder protection layer is often laid over the single ply waterproofing build up to provide protection to the system from the supports used. The support pads or bearers are incorporated to spread the imposed load more effectively of the roof surface. A table of suitable protection layers is detailed on page 62 of this guide. 67 bauder. co. uk TESTING AND INSPECTIONS As part of their own quality control procedures, the installing Bauder Approved Contractor will mechanically test the integrity of the jointed seams. Additionally, our Site Technicians will randomly inspect the work during installation. To meet the criteria of the Bauder System Guarantee, we will carry out the final inspection with the Approved Contractor in attendance to ensure the integrity of the finished roof and that it meets the standards of installation required by both Bauder and the Single Ply Roofing Association. Any issues identified will be reported to the Bauder Approved Contractor for immediate rectification. Any remedial work will then be re- tested. If following trades are to use the finished roof covering as a working platform or for access, it is recommended that integrity testing be carried out and the results notified to Bauder and the client prior to any other trades having access. It may then be necessary to re- test any affected areas after the other trades works are complete. On completion of the single ply waterproofing installation, Bauder recommends electronic integrity testing where suitable, this can be carried on the completed roof area and will give reassurance to the roofs integrity prior to handing over to the client or main contractor. TESTING SINGLE PLY SYSTEMS There are different methods of testing a single ply waterproofing installation and their suitability varies with the roof and membrane type. ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE ( PULSE) TESTING Electrical earth leakage is suitable for proving waterproofing integrity or for locating known water ingress. It uses low voltage direct current to detect distortion in the electrical field across the waterproof covering caused by electrical leakage as it earths at locations of potential water ingress. A loop conductor is placed around the test area excluding any details and structural elements that would otherwise distort the results. The test method requires a conductive layer below the single ply membrane, either by foil- faced insulation or vapour barrier or by an electrically conductive deck. The roof area must also be wet during the test. It is suitable for both PVC and FPO Bauder membranes but does generally not work with EPDM or electrically conductive capping sheets. ELECTRICAL CAPACITANCE Electrical capacitance testing detects the refection of low intensity radio waves from liquid water lying below the waterproofing. It is suitable for locating areas of water ingress and for assessment of existing roofs for water entrapment. It can be used to give an approximate location of points of ingress but tends not to be as accurate as resistance testing. It is suitable for both PVC and FPO Bauder membranes but generally does not work with EPDM or electrically conductive bitumen membranes and it requires a dry roof surface. VACUUM TESTING A vacuum box detects air leakage into a chamber which is placed over the membrane is suitable for testing the integrity of small areas of membrane such as seams and details if they cannot be tested by electrical methods. It is slow, and unlikely to be economically feasible for testing the whole roof field areas. ?
